Multi-professional cooperation and professional development for content-focused language-supportive teaching in elementary all-day school settings
Drawing on the scaffolding approach and considering the multilingual background of students, the project aims at promoting the domain-specific and language-related learning of elementary school children in grades 3 and 4 in all-day school settings. We further aim at strengthening the cooperation between teachers and pedagogical staff, includingextracurricular learning sites in order to provide cross-linked learning opportunities on the topic of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and to foster students’ language development across the curriculum. To this end, we aim to develop and test
- language-supportive teaching materials on the topic of ESD and
- professional development (PD) for subject-related language support for teachers and pedagogical staff.
Teaching materials and PDs will subsequently be evaluated within a longitudinal quasi-experimental control group design. Teachers and pedagogical staff from two experimental groups will participate in PD on subject-related language support. Both PD programs are adapted from a positively evaluated PD on the scaffolding approach for language-focused teaching. In one group, the PD will additionally be enriched by elements of multilingual didactics. To evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention, we will investigate changes in cognitive, motivational, and emotional characteristics of teachers, pedagogical staff, and students, and we will analyze teaching and cooperation processes. To ensure continuity and transfer into educational practice, we will conduct cross-school workshops on the preconditions for successful long-term cooperation, initiate the formation of a school network, and provide the evaluated teaching materials as open educational resources.
Objectives
With our project, we aim at supporting elementary school children in their language-related and content-specific learning, strengthening the multi-professional cooperation among teachers and pedagogical staff, and providing evaluated language-supportive teaching materials.
