StePs
Strengthening Linguistic Participation in Nursing Education (STePs) – Nursing School and Practice as a Learning Opportunity
STePs is an interdisciplinary research and development project in the field of nursing and German as a second language education. The aim is to support multilingual migrant trainees in successfully completing their nursing training with the help of systematically integrated language learning opportunities. In this way, the individual potentials of trainees as well as the professional qualification and recruitment of skilled workers will be supported. The research project and the concept/material development will be carried out in a participatory manner with the involvement of all stakeholders in the two learning locations (nursing school, nursing practice). After the functional analysis of linguistic needs based on the reconstruction of social practices in nursing education through episodic interviews and group discussions, combined with document analyses, observations and audiographies in the classroom and in nursing practice, sustainable and systematically interlinked language learning opportunities will be developed. For the formal learning opportunities in nursing school and practice, concepts for strengthening German language proficiency will be developed with the aim of implementing/testing such concepts in further training measures for nursing teachers and practice instructors. In addition, innovative concepts for integrating language learning into non-formal and informal learning opportunities in nursing practice will be developed and tested. Research into the effects of these learning opportunities will be conducted by all stakeholders: this is intended to interlink the results of research and practice at an early stage and in a sustainable manner as well as to ensure the mutual transfer of knowledge.
